The Living Countryside Awards celebrate the people and projects that have a positive impact on Bedfordshire’s rural environment and urban green spaces. In 2023 we are celebrating 15 years of the awards is now open to apply or nominate a project.
This could be an individual, community group, project or business. There are 3 categories and we hope you will consider making a nomination in one of these.
Grassroots and Green shoots
Celebrating community action and volunteering, this category recognises community groups and projects that are making a difference to the natural environment and the community in which they are based.
Made in Bedfordshire
Championing local food, drink and crafts, recognising local producers of food, drink, arts and crafts who through their work, either directly or indirectly enhance the rural environment and the rural economy.
Keep it Wild!
This category celebrates projects that nurture nature, recognising groups that are working to improve biodiversity.
There is also the popular Bedfordshire Choice award. This award goes to the project that best promotes a living and thriving countryside as chosen by the people of Bedfordshire.
As well as celebrating your achievements, this is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the project and inspire others while engaging with new audiences. It is also a good way to acknowledge the work done by volunteers and staff.

A6 Roundabout Improvements Scheme.
The following permanent speed reductions were agreed at the latest CBC Traffic Management Meeting.
Clophill, Bedford Road and Deadman’s Hill – 30mph and 40mph Speed Limit Proposals
- That the proposal to introduce a 30mph Speed Limit be implemented on the following lengths of road in Clophill:- – Bedford Road (A6), from the northern arm of Clophill Roundabout and extending in a generally north westerly direction for approximately 511 metres
- That the proposal to introduce a 40mph Speed Limit be implemented on the following lengths of road in Clophill:- – Bedford Road (A6), from a point approximately 511 metres north-west of the northern arm of Clophill Roundabout and extending in a north-westerly direction for approximately 167 metres up to a point where the road splits into two lanes and becomes Deadmans Hill.
- That the proposal to introduce a 40mph Speed Limit be implemented on the following lengths of road in Clophill:- – Deadmans Hill (A6), from the junction with Bedford Road and extending in a north westerly direction for approximately 138 metres
On Sunday 23 April 2023, there will be a national test of the UK Emergency Alerts service
This is due to take place in the afternoon of Sunday, 23 April, as announced on Wednesday, 5 April.
The UK government’s new Emergency Alerts system will enable people to be contacted via their mobile phone when lives are in danger.
It will be used to warn you in the event of emergencies, such as severe flooding.
Emergency Alerts are sent to all 4G and 5G compatible mobile phones within an area of risk. They don’t track your location, need your phone number, or collect personal data. Only the government and the emergency services will be able to send them. If you don’t have a mobile phone, you’ll still be kept informed through other channels.
What will it sound like?
If you get an Emergency Alert on your phone, you’ll hear a loud, siren-like sound. A message on your screen will tell you about the emergency and how best to respond. You’ll be able to check an alert is genuine at gov.uk/alerts.
